Bulgarian customs officers discovered 145 kilograms of marijuana in a truck at a border crossing with Turkey. As customs officials reported on Monday, the drugs were found on August 10 in Kaptain Andreevo, a small village in southern Bulgaria.
The Austrian driver of Turkish origin, who drove the vehicle towards Turkey, said he was transporting chemicals from Western Europe destined for Turkey, Bulgaria’s main customs office announced on Monday.
According to the information, the drugs were hidden in a truck with Romanian license plates behind preparations for the chemical industry. Customs officials found 135 packets of marijuana worth 2.3 million leva (almost 1.2 million euros) in five travel bags (pictured below) and nine boxes.
There are several drug smuggling routes through the southeastern EU country of Bulgaria. According to official information, a large amount of marijuana was seized in a Turkish truck on the Bulgarian border with Turkey in February.
