Three children on board – the car suddenly caught fire in the Karawanken tunnel

Date:

A French family experienced moments of shock on the Karawanken Autobahn (A11) in Carinthia in the early hours of Monday morning. While driving through the tunnel, flames suddenly erupted from the engine compartment.

The Frenchwoman drove her car on the A11 from Slovenia towards Villach on Monday around 4:25 am. Her husband and three children were on board. When the family was about a kilometer from the exit of the Karawanken tunnel, smoke suddenly billowed from the engine compartment. “When the 43-year-old immediately steered into the emergency lane, the engine compartment was already on fire,” says a police officer.

No injuries
When firefighters arrived, the man was able to contain the fire with a fire extinguisher. Fortunately no one was injured. However, the woman was taken to the regional hospital in Villach for clarification due to breathing problems.

The tunnel was completely closed until rescue work was completed – until just after 6am. The fire brigades of St. Jakob im Rosental, Frießnitz Rosenbach, Maria Elend, Dolintschach, Rosegg and the Slovenian fire brigade PGD Jesenice were deployed.
