‘Safe and sound’: – Six missing persons found after two days at sea

Date:

Six people have been found alive in the waters off Indonesia after being missing for two days. The search for another person is still ongoing, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said on Tuesday.

The group was en route to a private island – a popular surfing and diving spot – some 150 kilometers from the Indonesian island of Sumatra when their boat ran into bad weather and lost contact, Australian broadcaster ABC reported Tuesday.

Four Australian tourists and two Indonesians
The rescued were four Australian tourists and two Indonesians. The missing person is also said to be from Indonesia.

“Safe and sound”
Wong said he was relieved that the four missing Australians had been found “safe and sound” in Indonesia. Three of the four Australians were found floating on their surfboards off the Banyak Islands, the head of the local search and rescue service said. Another Australian was later found, according to ABC. The Australian Foreign Office therefore worked closely with the Indonesian authorities and supported the air and sea search within a radius of 50 nautical miles (about 93 kilometers).

Group of 17 people
According to the head of the search and rescue service, the missing were among a group of 17 people traveling in two wooden speedboats. One of the boats with ten people on board decided to seek shelter on a small island because of the heavy rain and strong wind. The other boat with seven people on board continued the journey but did not reach the island. What exactly happened to the boat was initially unknown.
