There are acts that leave you speechless – including a vandalism in Velden (Carinthia), where the mobile lifeboat was destroyed and thus rendered useless.
The unknown perpetrators immediately struck Tuesday night at the Velden water rescue service in Kap Wörth. They were clearly targeting the mobile water rescue boat that has been on this site for ten years. “A clean cut was made with a sharp knife. The boat was practically cut open. It must have happened very quickly in passing so that no one noticed. Who does such a thing?” Gerd Mühlmann, head of the ÖWR in Velden, is appalled.
Emergency rescue now delayed
Apart from the financial damage, which amounts to about 2000 euros, this act of vandalism entails dangers for the general public. “We can no longer go out with the boat and are therefore severely limited in our operational capabilities. Although the area is temporarily covered by other deployment locations, it takes a few minutes longer for help to arrive if something happens,” says Mühlmann.
It takes twelve weeks before the desired boat model can be delivered. “Then there’s the running around in terms of labeling, approval and the like. This is an extra and above all unnecessary effort for us volunteers, because we have to sacrifice our time because of such deliberate damage,” says the site manager in bewilderment.
A report has now been filed with the police. Nothing is known about the perpetrators so far.
