Three families had to be rescued by emergency services on Wednesday evening. The holidaymakers got lost in the Karawanken and could not continue walking.
For three Hungarian families, Wednesday would be a pleasant walking day in the Karawanken. The group planned a hike from the Johannsenruhe in the Bärental via a via ferrata to the Hochstuhl, then to the Bielsschitzasattel and then to the Klagenfurter Hütte.
Hikers landed in Slovenia
One of the vacationers separated from the group and started the tour alone. When he received a text message around 10 p.m. that the walk would take longer and that coordinates from Slovenia had also been forwarded, the Hungarian decided to make an emergency call. The Carinthian officials immediately informed their Slovenian colleagues.
Walking group completely exhausted
Around 11 p.m., the Hungarian alpinist made another distress call. “Officials sat down in the direction of the Klagenfurter Hut to clarify the facts. Upon arrival at the Klagenfurter Hut, several cones of light could be seen in the area of the Bielsschitzasattel, descending the valley,” the police said.
The three adults and the seven children or young people between the ages of seven and twenty were then found completely exhausted in the cirque. They were escorted by local officials in the direction of Klagenfurter Hütte.
Ferlach’s mountain rescue service brought the exhausted hikers down to the valley with sturdy shoes, helmets and climbing equipment.
