Car swept away – storm drama: family of four evacuated

Date:

Heavy rainfall has led to several mudslides in the Salzburger Oberpinzgau. On the B161, Pass Thurn Straße, a car was hit by a debris stream on Thursday evening and pushed against a crash barrier. In Mittersill, the Rettenbach overflowed its banks. A family with two small children had to be evacuated from their home.

Heavy rainfall caused dangerous situations in the streets of Mittersill on Thursday evening. The Pass Thurn road (B161) was hit by mudslides, with a German vehicle being hit by a mudslide. Fortunately, the 44-year-old driver and his passenger (39) were unharmed.

car detected
As the police announced on Friday, several mudslides went down. A car was hit and pushed against a guardrail. The police and the Red Cross were quickly on the scene to receive and help the shocked holidaymakers. The road maintenance service has worked hard to clear the affected sections of the Pass Thurn road between road kilometers 5.2 and 7.0. The road was finally reopened to traffic around midnight.

Not only the Pass Thurn road was affected by the extreme weather. The Rettenbach overflowed its banks, which led to the flooding of the Rettenbachstraße. The local volunteer fire brigade quickly mobilized to clear the affected runway. A family of four was evacuated from their first floor home after firefighters cleared the blocked driveway. Fortunately, all family members were unharmed.

No water
The state of Salzburg says the Rettenbach district will be examined on foot and by helicopter and then a decision will be made whether other people should be evacuated. The storms also destroyed the drinking water supply in the Mittersill district of Rettenbach. The affected objects have no drinking water until further notice and are supplied by the aid organizations.

A roof fire broke out in one of the buildings around 2:45 a.m., but it was quickly extinguished.

“Great Luck”
Gebhard Neumayr, head of power and avalanche control in Pinzgau, today explored Mittersill’s stormy weather area by helicopter. “The people in the Rettenbach district were very lucky that nothing more happened. The Graben has a huge catchment area and is completely undeveloped,” says Neumayr. In comparison, “A few days ago we had a similar storm in the Burk district, where the Kranzbach dam filled up and nothing else happened. This is now being cleaned up to restore protective function,” says Neumayr.
