Mexico and the US state of California are currently sounding the alarm. Because Hurricane “Hilary” in the Pacific is roaring towards them and has intensified significantly.
The U.S. Hurricane Center in Miami announced on Friday that it was a “big and powerful” hurricane heading toward Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula and southern California. The storm can now be classified as a category four out of five. In this regard, the authority warned of possible flash flooding and significant flooding due to heavy rainfall.
According to the information, “Hilary” recently reached wind speeds of almost 230 kilometers per hour. However, it is expected that the wind will gradually decrease from Saturday, the authority reports. By Sunday afternoon, Hilary could weaken to a tropical storm before reaching southern California.
The meteorologists assumed tropical storms would develop over the southern portion of the Baja California peninsula during Friday and spread northward over the weekend. The associated rainfall over the southwestern US should therefore not peak until the end of the week.
Waves up to six meters high
Mexico’s national water agency, Conagua, recently located the hurricane 690 kilometers south of the touristy coastal town of Cabo San Lucas on the Baja California peninsula. She also warned on Thursday (local time) of heavy rainfall on the mainland and waves of up to six meters high in central western Mexico.
More storms due to climate change
The hurricane season begins May 15 in the Pacific and June 1 in the Atlantic. It will be declared over in both regions on November 30. Tropical cyclones form over warm ocean waters. Global warming increases the risk of severe storms. Wind speeds of 119 kilometers per hour or more are called a hurricane.
