According to official sources, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with senior commanders in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don. But his opponent Volodymyr Zelenskyy is also on the way – looking for arms cooperation.
At the headquarters of the ‘special military operation’, as the war against Ukraine is also called in Russia, Putin met Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov, among others, the Kremlin reported Saturday evening. He also had reports from commanders and officers.
It is not clear when exactly the meeting should have taken place. A reason for Putin’s visit was also not given.
Wagner occupied the headquarters
Rostov-on-Don, not far from Ukraine, has also gained international notoriety when Russian mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigoshin occupied it for several hours in late June as part of his short-lived uprising.
Frustrated with what he saw as ineffective Russian military leadership, Prigozhin marched his fighters from Rostov to Moscow. After negotiations with the Kremlin, with Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko acting as a mediator, the 62-year-old then ordered the withdrawal.
Selenskyj on the road in Sweden
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he has arrived in Sweden for a visit. Zelenskyy told the Telegram short message service that he would hold talks with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, the royal family and other representatives. This should include bilateral cooperation in the arms industry.
Zelenskyj is joined by his wife Olena, as he announced on X (formerly Twitter):
According to British government experts, the Russian invading forces and the Ukrainian defenders face similar challenges. It is mainly about defeating well-entrenched forces along the front, while only limited forces are available to launch new attacks, the Defense Ministry intelligence report in London showed on Saturday.
There have been largely no changes on the frontline over the past week, according to the British statement. Only in the south did the Ukrainians continue their advance along the Mokri Jaly River, despite fierce Russian resistance, to recapture the village of Uroshaine. The Russians, on the other hand, had not had any significant success in trying to advance into the Kuyansk area.
