The violence before the presidential elections in Ecuador continues. The mayor of a town in western Ecuador says he survived an assassination attempt late Friday night in which 30 shots were fired at his vehicle.
For Francisco Tamariz, the case is clear, as he writes on X (formerly Twitter): “They wanted to kill me.” According to him, two gunmen got out of a police car and started shooting at the mayor’s armored car. Besides Tamariz, his wife and two companions were also in the vehicle. All were unharmed.
Ecuador will hold the first round of presidential elections on Sunday. The election was overshadowed by the assassination of center candidate Fernando Villavicencio. Once peaceful Ecuador has become a scene of international drug crime, with a higher murder rate than Mexico and Colombia.
Presidential candidate witnessed a shooting
Another presidential candidate, Otto Sonnenholzner, reported on X on Saturday that he witnessed a shooting in Guayaquil. The shots were fired near the cafe where he had breakfast with his family. According to Sonnenholzner, it involved a police chase. Five suspects have been arrested after an attempted robbery of a sports shop.
