“Can’t win” – Republicans: Trump should give up his candidacy

Date:

Former US President Donald Trump should drop out of the race for the White House in 2024, according to a prominent Republican senator. Senator Bill Cassidy said Trump could not win the campaign against Democratic President Joe Biden. Voters would not elect someone to be president who should be convicted of a crime.

Cassidy is one of seven Senate Republicans to vote to convict Trump in the second impeachment trial in 2021.

‘He will lose to Biden’
When asked if Trump should pull out of the presidential race, the Louisiana Republican told CNN’s State of the Union: “I think so. But of course that’s up to him, I guess you’re just asking my opinion. But he will losing to Joe Biden if you look at the current polls.”

charges against Trump
Trump is the leading Republican presidential nominee despite mounting legal troubles, including four criminal charges. Few of Trump’s rivals have openly criticized the ex-president, even though charges have been filed against him.

Trump clearly leads the Republican field of candidates
According to the latest polls, Trump leads the Republican candidate field for the 2024 presidential election with 47 percent. With 13 percent approval among party voters, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis trailed in second place.

Trump does not participate in TV debates
Trump himself also made himself heard on Sunday, announcing that the first televised debate prior to the Republican primaries would take place without him. “The public knows who I am and what a successful presidency I’ve had,” Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social. “I will therefore not participate in the debates,” Trump said in capital letters. He indicated that he would not only stay away from the first appointment on Wednesday, but also from other internal party television debates of his party.

There has been speculation whether Trump would instead give an interview to Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who was recently fired. That would be an insult to the Republican Party and the right-wing TV station.
