Stupid for a couple who took far too long a leave of absence from their cruise trip: they got back to the ship a few minutes late after a trip to Bali. The captain had already cast off with the “MSC Splendida”. The passengers were simply left at the port – without their luggage.
The nine-day cruise would go from the Italian port city of Trieste to Istanbul and back. But for one couple, the journey came to an abrupt end. Because the two had returned to the ship too late after landing in the southern Italian city of Bari. Other passengers filmed the dramatic scenes from inside the vehicle.
“Please captain, please,” the man asked the skipper in Italian not to continue the journey. “Captain, please wait for us. You can if you want.” But the 333-meter ship slowly moves on, the couple can only desperately watch it.
Witness: ‘No trouble finding people’
One passenger told the Daily Mail how she saw the scene: “I was on this cruise with my family when it happened. We were having lunch when they made a single announcement for two Italian sounding names and nothing more.” The captain waited less than a minute for the ship to move, “There was little to no trouble finding the people.”
Cruise ship delays can be costly
Ugo Patroni Griffi of the Port Authority told La Repubblica that he was very sorry about the incident. But cruise ships couldn’t just turn back; They have a tight schedule to adhere to and the mooring costs for such vessels in the port are very high. However, the hapless couple shouldn’t have taken so much of their holiday: it would have been the penultimate day of the trip. It is not known how the tourists got their luggage back.
