According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Greece is also part of the fighter jet coalition for Ukraine. The president announced this on Monday during a surprise visit to Athens.
According to the Defense Minister of Ukraine, the training of jet fighter pilots by an 11-member coalition has already started and should ideally be completed by early 2024. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also pledged support for the reconstruction of the war-torn country during his meeting with Zelensky.
A “special focus” is on Odessa. The Ukrainian port city plays an important role in the history of modern Greece: in the early 19th century, a Greek secret organization was founded there, which sparked the 1821 revolt against Ottoman rule in Greece.
Discussions about the road to the EU
Zelenskyy’s visit to Athens coincided with an informal dinner with leaders from the Balkans and EU leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU Council President Charles Michel. One of the topics was the path of non-EU countries and EU accession candidates to the alliance.
In October, the European Commission will decide whether to recommend to European Union leaders to open accession negotiations with Ukraine, which is under Russian attack. The EU made the country an official candidate for membership last year.
