In the travel month of July alone, US air traffic control recorded 46 close calls in commercial aviation, according to research by the New York Times. Calculated throughout the year, there are several incidents per week this year.
According to the US report, most of the incidents occurred at or near airports and were largely due to human error. Errors made by air traffic controllers can be attributed to a lack of staff and the resulting excessive demands.
