BRICS summit – What’s going on with Vladimir Putin’s voice?

Date:

The so-called BRICS countries want to discuss the expansion of the confederation of states at their summit in South Africa. With the enlargement, Russia and China want to create a counterweight to the G7 alliance of the main Western industrialized countries. According to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, this is the best way to fulfill the wishes of most of the world’s population. Putin, who had not traveled to South Africa due to an international arrest warrant, spoke in a video address. His voice caused irritation.

As before, the head of the Kremlin sharply criticized the Western states and their sanctions regime against Moscow. These would have led, among other things, to high food prices and thus to rising inflation. In this regard, the Russian leader stated that the grain deal between his country and Ukraine had been suspended due to “ignored commitments to Russia”.

Moscow will only lift the blockade of Ukrainian ports and return to the agreement once all Russian demands are met, Putin said. With the start of its war of aggression against Ukraine eighteen months ago, Russia also imposed a naval blockade on the neighboring country’s ports. Because Ukraine is a major grain exporter, concerns about a food crisis have increased internationally. In the summer of 2022, the grain agreement, negotiated by the UN and Turkey, ended the blockade. The agreement, originally concluded for four months, has been extended several times. In July, however, Russia rejected a further extension.

Putin offers himself as a grain supplier
At the BRICS summit, he offered to replace Ukrainian grain shipments on the world market with Russian shipments, “both on a commercial basis and through free aid to the countries in need.” As a first step, Russia decided to send six African countries between 25,000 people. and supplying 50,000 tons of grain, the 70-year-old said. Putin had already made the offer at a summit between Russia and Africa in July. The substantive points were actually nothing new. However, Putin’s ‘new’ voice caused astonishment.

As the independent Russian-Latvian news portal ‘Meduza’ reported on Tuesday, the summit participants heard a much deeper Russian voice than that of the Kremlin chief. As proof, the website posted images of accredited Russian journalists from Johannesburg (see videos above). It is not clear whether there was a technical error in the transmission from Moscow.
