The BRICS group has agreed to accept new members. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who hosted the BRICS summit in Johannesburg, announced that the decision had been made to admit six new countries by January 1, 2024.
Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) would be invited.
So far, the group of major emerging countries includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. An expansion that China, for example, has pushed for, is intended to give the bloc more global weight.
China and Russia insist on counterbalancing the West
China and Russia in particular are pushing for a counterbalance to the West, while Brazil, on the other hand, rejects a front-line position with the G7 alliance of the main Western industrialized countries. According to their own statements, the BRICS countries currently account for 42 percent of the world’s population, 30 percent of the world’s land area and 24 percent of global economic output.
