It was a terrible accident: on Sunday, a 55-year-old water skier fell into the ship’s propeller near Eternberg in the Innviertel region, in front of his wife, who was steering the boat. The athlete is said to have lost a leg and drowned. A body with leg injuries has now been recovered.
The body floated on Thursday near Obernzell, just across the border in Bavaria, in the Danube. The German emergency services alerted the water rescue service of Linz, after which fireboats rescued the lifeless body on Austrian territory.
Not sure yet
The identity of the body has not yet been clarified. However, there are strong indications: the male corpse has a leg injury that could have come from a ship’s propeller. It is therefore probably the 55-year-old water sports enthusiast who had an accident in the Danube on Sunday.
Get caught in the propeller
The 55-year-old from Bavaria went water skiing in the Innviertel at the weekend, his wife was at the helm of the boat. The accident then happened on the Bavarian side of the Danube. According to his wife, the athlete tried to climb back on board, but he slipped and was pulled into the spinning propeller, which would have severed his leg. Witnesses threw a lifebuoy to the 55-year-old, but the German was unable to hold onto it and sank in the floods.
A large-scale search by two Bavarian and four Upper Austrian fire brigades was initially unsuccessful.
