More than 1,000 people are still missing following the devastating wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui. The death toll, already well above 100, is likely to rise even further. A lawsuit has now been filed against the local electricity supplier.
In it, the district of Maui accuses the energy company Hawaiian Electric, among other things, of negligence. The power grid was not shut down, although the weather bureau had previously issued a warning for the island chain due to the high risk of fires promoted by drought, high temperatures and strong winds. In addition, power poles and other facilities were poorly maintained and neglected.
Neighbors also complain about the electricity company
According to a statement, falling power lines set dry vegetation on fire, sparking the blaze. The fires in Maui destroyed more than 2,200 buildings and caused an estimated $5.5 billion in property damage. The city is claiming damages for an undisclosed amount. There are already complaints from local residents against the group.
On August 8, forest and wildfires broke out in several places on Maui and the neighboring island of Hawaii. These were the worst fires in the U.S. for more than 100 years by casualty numbers. At least 115 people were killed in the almost completely destroyed city of Lahaina.
