At 11 a.m. on Friday, less than twenty swimmers enjoyed the cool water and the radiant sun in the Stadtbad Steyr. Is that because of the recent staircase of the ten meter high tower? The “Krone” asked the swimmers on site and heard a wide variety of opinions.
“I heard the story from a friend, now I have a sick feeling,” explains Miriam Mitterhauser (24) from Neuzeug. At a local inspection of the “Krone” on Friday morning in the Stadtbad Steyr, opinions differed greatly.
The lifeguard is charged
The whole of (Upper) Austria is talking about the incident that took place there almost two weeks ago in the municipal swimming pool of Steyr: a young man wanted to show courage and jump from the 10-meter high tower. When he didn’t dare, a lifeguard overreacted and, reportedly, quickly kicked the guest off the tower. Fortunately nothing happened to the person who was kicked, the lifeguard was initially warned and released, he is now being charged.
Kicking off the tower is an absolute no-go
Miriam Mitterhauser says lifeguards are people of trust: “For me it’s an absolute no-go that something like this happened.” Sebastian Fürst (20) from Neuhofen an der Krems says: “The reaction was not okay, but at a height of ten meters it was. A lot can happen.” However, he points out that it is not known whether the man who was kicked off the tower was provocative or even abusive.
Are lifeguards too effeminate?
Some swimmers think that the lifeguards are now too effeminate: “People often jump into the water in places where they are not allowed. There used to be a whistle, now hardly anyone does,” explains Steyrer Gerhard Pirringer (85).
It doesn’t matter which side you’re on, it’s clear that you should always look at both perspectives. However, this is difficult because the victim is unknown. The young man must report to the authorities.
