On Friday evening, a weather spectacle in Graz causes a stir: lightning can be seen every second, accompanied by severe thunderstorms and heavy rain with hailstones up to eight centimeters in size! The extreme lightning got many excited, social media is currently flooded with videos of it. Even tornadoes have been warned!
“The movie ‘War of the Worlds’ starts like this too,” said one reader – in fact, the leaf lightning, which appeared more intensely over the capital, was quite unusual and also quite scary.
Every second, violent lightning flashed across the night sky. See also the videos (above and below) from Straßgang and St. Peter. This glow lasted for at least half an hour – until the real, fierce thunderstorm started with lots of heavy rain.
And at the moment it is still going on unabated. Skywarn speaks of a “supercell currently affecting the Graz area. With the cell, hail up to 8 cm, heavy gusts of wind and heavy rain are possible. One of our pursuers is also currently observing a rotating funnel cloud. The formation of a tornado cannot therefore be ruled out!”
“We don’t see something like this very often, but there is no reason to be alarmed,” the state warning center said. “These could certainly be harbingers if a thunderstorm follows on an extremely hot summer day.”
A look at the back of the Grazer Schloßberg around 10.25 pm:
In Upper Styria, violent storms fell in the early evening – the consequences were once regionally dramatic. The fire brigade had to turn out, countless basements were flooded again, as were the streets.
More thunderstorms are predicted regionally for tomorrow, Saturday.
