A new hate crime has shocked the United States: A white man shot and killed three black people at a store in Jacksonville, Florida. The police spoke of a racially motivated act on Saturday evening (local time). The alleged shooter left behind several manifestos. Police described the shooter as a white man in his early twenties. He allegedly killed two men and a woman and then committed suicide.
“He hated black people,” Jacksonville Sheriff TK Waters said. Waters said the perpetrator wore a body armor and mask and was armed with an assault rifle and pistol. Some guns had swastikas on them, the sheriff said. The research is still in its infancy and many questions remain unanswered.
A video circulating on social media is said to show the perpetrator shortly before the crime:
“Disgusting ideology of hate” in several manifestos
The shooter lived with his parents. Shortly before the crime, the young man sent a message to his father asking him to check his computer. The parents called the police shortly afterwards, but at that time the gunman was already on the scene and fired shots. He wrote several manifestos: for his parents, for the media and for researchers. In it, he had captured a “disgusting ideology of hate,” Waters said.
Sheriff’s press conference after the heinous crime:
Sagittarius had acted alone
“He was targeting a certain group of people, and they were black people,” said the sheriff, who is also black. “Frankly, this was a madman who decided to kill others.” There is no evidence that the man belonged to any group. He acted alone. “This is a dark day in Jacksonville’s history,” Waters said. The hatred that drove the perpetrator makes the attack even more heartbreaking. The police initially declined to comment on the exact identities of the perpetrator and the victims.
