Germany is providing Ukrainian soldiers with weapons and equipment training, shooting training and combat service to survive the Russian war of aggression. One factor in particular causes headaches: the lack of skilled translators.
It is an intensive course, motivation is high and the pressure to perform is enormous. Twelve hours a day, six days a week, the Ukrainian soldiers do their best. However, the language barrier also brings pitfalls, because the translators on site are not always up to the task.
“Translators are the number one problem,” Dutch Brigadier General Martin Bonn told the British newspaper Financial Times. According to him, both Ukraine and the West employ underqualified translators and interpreters for this work. “The vocabulary from the military or technical field causes great difficulties … words that no one uses in everyday life.”
Big differences
The large differences between the students are also challenging. On the one hand, there are differences in their skills. On the other hand, age also differs greatly; for example, one of the participants is older than 70 years. A Ukrainian soldier who wished to remain anonymous reported that they too were dealing with know-it-alls. There are participants who were still trained in Soviet times and now believe that “they know everything better”.
Combat training of the German Bundeswehr
Die Within the framework of the EU mission, the German Bundeswehr offers, among other things, combat training for companies and tactical exercises for a brigade staff and the subordinate battalion staffs. The German offer also includes training for trainers, medical training and weapons system training in close cooperation with industry. By the end of the year, 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers will be trained in Germany.
