For those affected by the flood, this is probably little consolation; all in all, Tyrol should have come off with a black eye on Monday. The water level dropped further on Tuesday night. The civil defense warning in Kramsach has now been withdrawn – the one in Schwaz is likely to follow shortly. The extent of the damage will be determined on Tuesday.
Since Sunday evening there have been more than 500 alarms about the floods in Tyrol. Since then, more than 4,000 firefighters have been deployed continuously. On Monday morning, about 30 orders were still being processed.
The situation had deteriorated dramatically
The flooding situation due to heavy rain initially deteriorated dramatically over the course of Monday. Civil defense alerts were issued in the town of Schwaz and in Kramsach (now defunct). In Innsbruck the special Inn alarm plan came into effect, and especially in the lowlands, between Hall and Kufstein, there was still great fear in the evenings.
Further easing of the situation overnight
The good news: On the night of Tuesday, the water level in the country dropped considerably. By Monday afternoon, the situation had already eased somewhat. “We apparently came away with a black eye,” Governor Anton Mattle (ÖVP) said at a press conference. There have been no reports of injuries so far.
Damage and closures in some valleys
The bad news: the damage caused by flooding mainly occurred in valleys such as the Ötztal, the Stubaital, the Wipptal and the Zillertal. There are also some roadblocks there. For example, the B186 Ötztal Straße, which has been partially washed away and even torn away, is still closed. The rear Ötztal can only be reached via the Timmelsjoch.
The exact extent of the damage is currently unclear. The state announced that it would make an inventory of the damage – especially in the Ötztal – in the course of Tuesday.
