Military service lucrative – Russia significantly increased wages for soldiers

Date:

After more than eighteen months of invasion war in Ukraine, Moscow is having trouble recruiting more soldiers for its ‘military operation’. According to the British Ministry of Defence, this has an impact on wages, which have risen significantly since the start of the war.

Military service in the Russian armed forces has become increasingly lucrative since the invasion. This should make the soldier’s profession more attractive. However, despite this measure, it is speculated that Moscow is unlikely to meet its recruitment targets.

High wages are especially attractive to people from poorer areas
The higher wages and bonuses are a strong incentive to join the army, “especially for those from the poorer areas of Russia,” the British ministry said. “However, it is still unlikely that Russia will achieve its goals in recruiting volunteers for the armed forces.”

The salary is 2.7 times the average Russian wage
In their report, the British refer to a statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who made it clear a few weeks before the start of the war that the salary of a lieutenant would amount to 81,200 rubles (about 787 euros) per month. According to official figures, individuals now earn 195,000 rubles (currently 1,889 euros). As a non-commissioned officer you could already count on 200,000 rubles a month. This is more than 2.7 times the Russian average wage of 72,851 rubles. In Great Britain this corresponds to an annual salary of more than 90,000 pounds (about 105,000 euros).
