A total of at least 134 cases of salmonella infections have now been reported in ten EU countries plus Norway, believed to be linked to imported chicken meat. This was announced in Stockholm on Wednesday by the EU health authority ECDC.
The cases were registered in Austria, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, France, Finland, the Netherlands, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and Slovenia.
27 cases in Austria
There have been 27 cases of salmonella disease with Salmonella Enteritidis ST11 in Austria since February 2023. A man died in Carinthia.
Cheap meat from Poland
According to the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES), studies have shown a high likelihood of a link with chicken kebab skewers produced in Poland.
Surveys of patients in Austria and Denmark indicated that salmonella infections could be linked to the consumption of chicken meat, ECDC also writes. The AGES report was prepared about two weeks ago.
In Germany, a total of eleven people have been infected with Salmonella Enteritidis ST11. Most cases were reported between January and August 2023.
