Wild chase – Warning shots at fugitive men: five arrests

Date:

Spectacular scenes played out on Thursday evening in Achenkirch in the Tyrolean Unterland. In Germany, a car was already being chased by police officers. The Tyrolean forces blocked the road to stop the fleeing car. The five occupants fled moments later and were stopped by warning shots.

Shortly after 2 a.m., the state operations center received information from the police in Bad Tölz, Bavaria, that a car with Viennese plates was being followed from Munich on the B13 towards the Austrian border. The vehicle drove towards the Achenpas. Several police patrols and a helicopter followed the fleeing vehicle.

A few minutes later the car crossed the Achen Pass. Police patrols blocked Achenseestrasse at the Wiesing roundabout. The driver ignored attempts to stop by the German police and pushed the patrol cars away with daring overtaking maneuvers.

At around 2:30 a.m., the car sped toward the roadblock, braked briefly, then continued on and broke through. He damaged the back of a service vehicle. After about ten metres, the vehicle came to a stop.

Prisoners wanted to escape
“The driver and four other passengers jumped out of the car and tried to flee on foot,” the Tyrolean police said. Officials fired warning shots that eventually stopped the men from continuing to flee. The five people were arrested.

“A 27-year-old Syrian was identified as the driver, and his four passengers were believed to be from Arabic-speaking countries,” the investigators said. All five are currently being held at Jenbach Police Station for further questioning. The motive for the escape is still unclear. The State Criminal Investigation Department of Tyrol has started the investigation. A total of five Bavarian police patrols were deployed in Tyrol.
