This summer was the seventh warmest in recorded history. According to a preliminary balance by Geosphere Austria, this was 1.1 degrees above the recent average (1991-2020). In terms of precipitation (plus six percent) and sunshine duration (minus two percent), the summer was approximately close to the long-term average, according to a broadcast.
“According to the preliminary evaluation, the summer of 2023 in the lowlands of Austria will be 1.1 degrees above the average of the climate period 1991 to 2020, in the mountains also 1.1 degrees,” says Alexander Orlik, climatologist at Geosphere Austria.
This results in seventh place in the lowlands of Austria in the series of warmest summer months in the 257-year history of measurements and sixth place in the mountains in the 173-year series of mountain measurements. The summer of 2023 thus confirmed the trend towards an increasingly warmer climate. Of the fifteen warmest summer periods, thirteen occurred in the recent past.
25 warm days measured
According to Geosphere Austria, the number of warm days (minimum 30 degrees) remained below the records, but well above the average of recent decades. Below 500 meters above sea level there were an average of 25 warm days in Austria, 50 percent more than in an average summer in the recent past.
At an altitude of 500 to 1000 meters there were an average of 14 warm days this summer, which is 75 percent more than the average. The highest weather station in the Geosphere Austria that reached 30 degrees was Kals (1352 meters) in East Tyrol.
Replace dry June with wet August
In the Austria-wide evaluation, the amount of precipitation was six percent above the long-term average. This consists of a dry June (minus 35 percent), an average July (minus two percent) and a wet August (plus 56 percent). The regional evaluation showed longer dry periods and large amounts of precipitation. In August, for example, it rained as much in a few days in parts of western and southern Austria as the average for the whole of August, and new record amounts of rain were also recorded regionally.
The summer sunshine was balanced in all parts of the country. From Vorarlberg to Burgenland, the average deviation was between minus ten and plus ten percent.
