Gunman in Italy – Mentally ill soldier ensconced in apartment

Date:

An armed former sub-lieutenant in the Italian army with mental health problems has been barricaded since Wednesday at his home in Cordovado, in the Friuli province of Pordenone. “The man has several weapons in the apartment,” said Pordenone police chief Luca Carocci.

The ex-soldier, half-naked and with a gun in his hand, shouted, threatened and spat on some villagers on the square of the Friulian municipality on Wednesday, the media reported.

The citizens then raised the alarm. To renew his gun license, the ex-serviceman should have submitted a certificate of his mental and physical condition, which he did not do. As a result, the weapons should have been confiscated.

House evacuated
The apartment complex where the man lives was evacuated by the Carabinieri for security reasons and the residents had to spend the night in hotels. The army started negotiations with the man.

As a precaution, the shops in the city center next to the building where he lives were also evacuated. The power and gas supply to the ex-serviceman’s house was shut off to avert danger to the residents and the police.

Deep-rooted messages YouTube videos
Special Carabinieri units were stationed around the house in case a raid was needed. The central part of the village was cordoned off.

The ex-serviceman did not respond to calls from law enforcement. He posted videos to his YouTube channel on Thursday confirming that he had no suicidal intent. He is harmless, but needs his gun license.
