Fishhooks and Bites – Wounded Swans are successfully released

Date:

Swans proudly and gracefully make their rounds on the Danube and adjacent waters all year round. But the idyll is regularly disturbed by irresponsible people who let their dogs loose on the waterfowl. Thanks to a courageous animal lover, there are always rescues for injured animals.

Marina G. comes to the riverbank almost daily to visit her beloved swans. She knows the animals very well and has been working to protect them for years.

Unfortunately, she always has to see how the noble animals are at the mercy of brutal attacks: “Sometimes hikers let their dogs loose on the birds and find that funny. I’ve had to call the police many times, but by the time they show up for something like this, the animal abusers are gone.”

Bloody feathers
So again mid-July. The animal lover made her usual trip through the water and discovered a swan with blood-stained plumage near the shore. It was immediately clear that it was a major wound and that medical attention had to be provided quickly. The wild animal was caught by Marina G. and immediately taken to the animal shelter in Parndorf to vet Claudia Herka.

Another bite
The vet is especially familiar with swans and has cared for and cared for quite a few. The suspicion of a bite wound was quickly confirmed and with minor emergency surgery the swan was professionally treated and cared for.

Just a few days later, another incident occurred at the same location. A fish hook had pierced the beak of another swan, this animal was also secured by Mrs G. and taken to vet Herka.

The two wild animals are now doing well under circumstances and the vet has given the green light for the release. Here too, animal lover Marina G. comes into action again. She picked up the animals and released them back into their usual territory. She will remain the “guardian angel of the swans” on the banks of the Danube!
