Potential fire hazard: ban on e-scooters planned in Vienna’s public transport

Date:

After the city of Vienna relied on new rules instead of a ban on e-scooters, there is now talk of a ban on public transport at Wiener Linien. The reason for this would be a potential fire hazard emanating from the scooter’s batteries.

Wiener Linien is currently “seriously” considering banning e-scooters in all public transport. Accordingly, according to the standard, a spokeswoman for Wiener Linien had confirmed that a ban on e-scooters is currently under investigation. However, this test has not yet been completed.

50 euro fine
Unfolded e-scooters are already banned on the subway, bus and tram in Vienna. If you violate this, you risk a fine of 50 euros. Now the unpopular electric scooters must be completely banned from Viennese public transport.

Already banned in other major cities
E-scooters in public transport are also a thing of the past in other major European cities. For example, Hamburger Hochbahn AG has banned the transport of e-scooters since August 24 as a “precautionary measure for passenger safety”. E-scooters are also strictly prohibited in London and Barcelona.

Possible damage to health
According to an expert opinion from Hamburger Hochbahn AG, if an e-scooter malfunctions, there is a possibility that subsequent smoke development in closed rooms can cause damage to human health. So far, no fire incidents in Viennese public transport have been reported.

It is still unclear when a final decision will be taken on a possible ban in Vienna.
