Almost every day there are Ukrainian drone attacks on the Russian capital. Military use is small. But that’s not the point.
Russia’s major cities, such as the capital Moscow, are increasingly exposed to drone strikes. In the border areas with Ukraine, these attacks cause considerable damage and fatalities. According to British intelligence, the drone strikes reveal weaknesses in Russian air defenses. In August, Russia had to accept about 25 individual drone strikes.
How is it possible that a warring country with what is considered one of the most powerful armies in the world cannot protect its own cities – often far from the front lines – against air raids?
Small, slow, inconspicuous
Expert Gustav Gressel from the European Council of Foreign Relations explains: “The routine problem is size and speed. The drones fly in the same speed range as a faster car.”
However, air defense systems are usually calibrated for large and fast objects: missiles, planes, helicopters. “A drone the size of a car can fly very far relatively unscathed,” confirms military expert Colonel Markus Reisner. That is why drones in the airspace often fly over highways.
A not unimportant point for Gressel is the lack of automation in the Russian air defense system. And that a lot of weapons are simply needed at the front in Ukraine.
clear message
For Colonel Reisner, however, information sovereignty is an essential element. With few exceptions, the military benefits of these drone strikes are “very manageable.” But what these ongoing attacks make clear: “The Russians are unable to defend their cities,” explains Reisner. And second, “We bring the war to your home.”
These pinpricks of airstrikes keep Ukraine in control of the so-called information space and suggest that military momentum is on their side.
