The Italian government wants to expand cooperation with Tunisia in the fight against illegal immigration. Since the beginning of 2023 (including August), 113,483 people have arrived in Italy by sea, compared to 55,785 in the same period in 2022.
The cabinet of the Tunisian police in Rome also wants to provide patrol boats to step up the fight against people smuggling in the Mediterranean.
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi had a telephone conversation with his Tunisian counterpart Kamel Fekih on Thursday. The aim was to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fight against human trafficking.
“Must Do More”
“It is important to work with Tunisia. We must work for Tunisia’s stability and invest more money to implement the agreement with Tunisia to end irregular migration. The Tunisian police are working well at the moment, but we need to do more,” said Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.
Meloni wants migrant centers
Given the sharp increase in the number of refugees, the Italian government is working on a so-called security decree with measures to speed up the repatriation of people who have attracted attention through violent or dangerous behavior. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government also wants to set up centers in each of Italy’s 20 regions to detain migrants pending their repatriation.
