More and more from Moscow: cybercriminals threaten the German economy

Date:

More and more German companies are struggling with cyber attacks. They should be organized into gangs.

Cyberattacks attributed to organized crime have increased significantly, according to a new study by digital industry association Bitkom presented on Friday.

According to a survey of more than 1,000 companies from all sectors, 61 percent of the affected companies see the perpetrators in this area. A year ago the share was 51 percent, two years ago it was only 29 percent.

206 billion euros in damage
For the first time, 52 percent felt threatened by cyber attacks, says Bitkom chairman Ralf Wintergerst. The total damage caused by theft of IT equipment and data, by digital and analogue industrial espionage and by sabotage is now estimated at 206 billion euros.
This brings the damage above the limit of 200 billion euros for the third time in a row, according to Wintergerst (2022: 203 billion euros, 2021: 223 billion euros). According to Bitkom, more and more attacks are coming from Russia and China.
