Singer Celine Dion has revealed she has Stiff Person Syndrome. Now she is fighting hard against the rare disease. An expert explains what the rare disease is and what serious consequences it has for those affected.
Rigid Person Syndrome (SPS) is extremely rare – about eight people have been affected in Austria, as neurologist Dr. Andreas Winkler reports. Therefore, relatively little is known about this condition. “It is known to be an autoimmune disease. This means that the immune system attacks the body’s own structures – in this case the nerves.” Patients with SPS often have to suffer for years and go through a veritable “doctor marathon” before they finally know what is wrong with them. Dr Winkler: “At first the symptoms are very often misinterpreted as psychosomatic. As a result, valuable time is lost before the diagnosis is made.”
