In Salzburg, thousands of apartments are still empty. Activists protested against this fact on Saturday – occupying an empty house in the Ändräviertel. It belongs to skier Marcel Hirscher. But in this house there should be a good reason why no one lives in it.
About 30 activists occupied the Hirscher house on Franz-Josef-Strasse for four hours on Saturday afternoon – a large contingent of police were on the scene. Their motivation: to expose the empty buildings.
“There are more than 1,100 homeless people in the city alone. In contrast, some 147 homes and 10,000 apartments are vacant. This means that not only all the homeless from Salzburg, but also a number of other homeless people could find shelter here,” according to the activists. More than 10,000 apartments in Salzburg are secondary residences, several thousand of which are empty. payment is reviewed.
Magistrate access denied
There must be a good reason why no one currently lives in Marcel Hirscher’s house: in May 2021, the municipality banned access to the house by the building authorities – the government information letter was on the front door for a long time. According to informed circles, fuel oil could have leaked during the work and a fire service was the result. The responsible department is said to have responded by forbidding access. However, the note has since disappeared from the entrance portal.
The ex-ski star has another house nearby, which he bought in 2018. However, this property should not be empty, as the local inspection “Krone” showed this weekend. It is still unclear how Annaberger herself feels about the temporary occupation of his mansion – Hirscher declined to comment on the incident.
