It was THE Kremlin’s propaganda project: the failed moon mission ‘Luna 25’. The probe fell on Earth’s satellite, the once great space nation of Russia was embarrassed. A few days ago, the project’s lead scientist died – reportedly from mushroom poisoning…
77-year-old Vitaly Melnikov was the head of the lunar mission, which would be of particular importance to ruler Vladimir Putin. Melinkov died a few days ago, according to Russian media, he would have eaten poisonous mushrooms. But the circumstances of his death raise questions.
Sick shortly after the start of “Luna 25”.
Not least because of the mysterious plane crash that led to the death of Putin’s opponent, the mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigoshin, no one really wants to believe in Melnikov’s official cause of death. The 77-year-old died in a Russian hospital on Wednesday morning after being admitted on August 11. The day before “Luna-25” started, it was officially said that everything was running normally, except for a minor course correction.
On August 19, the probe hit the moon and shattered. Ironically, the American space agency NASA later published photos of the crash site. The Russians’ goal was to collect data for a future lunar station. The failure of the mission was not just a blow to science. Experts also saw defeat for Putin as head of state, who wanted to catapult the former astronaut nation back to the top of international space researchers.
“Been alone with the preparation”
The information published after the death of Project Master Melnikov is all the more questionable. The 77-year-old is said to have collected the deadly mushrooms himself in a forest near Moscow, and it was also emphasized that the scientist was “alone in the preparation”. The Melnikov family was in town at the time.
Vitaly Melnikov worked at RSC Energia, the largest aerospace company in Russia, where he headed the missile and space systems department and participated in many scientific experiments. And: He was a passionate mushroom picker and connoisseur. That the 77-year-old would have made such a mistake – nobody really seems to believe that. But you can never prove otherwise.
