Russian troops have been slowly advancing in Ukraine since the beginning of this year. Ukrainian defenses have had to abandon village after village. Units that were already insufficiently trained and equipped had to go into battle.
Among other things, the blockade of US military aid in Congress has contributed to this. For months, the Republicans blocked the delivery of weapons, equipment and ammunition. During this time, the Ukrainian army has used up almost all of its own reserves to maintain the front, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said recently.
Important fort lost
This subsequently led to the loss of the important Avdiivka fortress, which had been developed since 2014 into a stronghold against the expected Russian attack. Only there did the Ukrainian armed forces have underground defensive positions in many places.
Another challenge for Ukrainian soldiers is a new “secret weapon” of the war enemy. Russian planes drop glide bombs many kilometers away from the actual front-line positions. These jet fighters are therefore inaccessible to Ukrainian air defenses. Glide bombs were further developed during the war so that they could reach their target with some accuracy. They are also said to have contributed to the destruction of the fortifications of Avdiivka.
Forces were diverted but not withdrawn
What the Russian troops gain rarely resembles human habitation. In the captured villages, for example, there are ruins, houses bombed into piles of stones, and scorched earth.
A surprise attack by Ukrainian forces on the Russian border area near Kursk (see video above) brought no relief, said the chief military coordinator of German Ukraine aid, Christian Freuding. The war enemy diverted the forces, but did not withdraw combat troops from Donbass. That is where the defense lines are currently located.
“Russia has its own mathematics”
“If, with our Western attitude, with our Western perspective, we have always thought that Russian society can only tolerate a certain number of victims, then we must now recognize that Russia has its own mathematics,” Freuding said.
The Ukrainians are also said to be taking a “deliberately high risk”. They are heading for the third, bitter winter of war. With additional air defence – financed by the EU and GZ, among others – the defence against Russian attacks on infrastructure and energy supplies should improve rapidly.
