In Vienna, “Fiaker” with rum and “Biedermaier” with apricot liqueur have long been known. A Chinese coffee house chain has now created a coffee with schnapps and created a real hype. The Maotai coffee was available Monday at Luckin Coffee, a rival of the American chain Starbucks.
Maotai, also called Moutai, is a popular Chinese schnapps made from millet with an alcohol content of 53 percent; half a liter costs the equivalent of about 320 euros. But the milky coffee creation does not come across as high in percentage: with an alcohol content of only 0.5 percent and the equivalent of about 2.40 euros, the mugs went over the counter in Beijing branches on Monday.
Schnapps coffee went viral
Nevertheless, there were warnings for pregnant women, minors, motorists and allergy sufferers. The offering is a limited collaboration between Luckin Coffee and liqueur maker Kweichow Moutai.
The newly created coffee quickly became one of the most discussed topics in the online networks on Monday. At one branch, an employee reported that 80 percent of daily orders were for Maotai coffee. In the afternoon they stopped taking new orders in order to process everything – in Beijing many people have their coffee delivered.
Coffee chains are starting in China
China is not a coffee drinking country. Coffee chains only reached the People’s Republic in the last twenty years. Especially young people consume latte, Americano and Co.
