There is a lot of activity on the Austro-Hungarian border in Burgenland when it comes to illegal migration. The 2021 limit of 19,938 refugees will be crossed very soon. On Monday, the influx in the districts of Neusiedl am See and Oberpullendorf continued unabated.
Since the beginning of the summer, the number of arrests has been steadily increasing. Last week, 1,138 refugees reached a new peak in 2023: 52 more immigrants than in the previous seven days.
More than 200 migrants a day
“With more than 200 registrations each, most of the work had to be done on Thursday and Friday,” said the police. Another five smugglers were arrested. A total of 158 accomplices of smuggling gangs have already been taken out of circulation this year.
The border situation is coming to a head again
The imminent withdrawal of the federal army from the border and larger groups of thirty refugees and the simpler invasion of the country had drawn heavy criticism from Nikitsch. Exactly one year ago, the eyes of observers of the migration movements were already on the 1,420-member community.
Already 18,835 refugees
In the summer of 2022, many more arrests were registered in Nikitsch in five weeks than the border town has inhabitants. This year, however, the whole of Burgenland is far from being in the precarious situation it was then. At the beginning of September, more than 39,000 refugees were registered in 2022. Now it is 18,835. However, the total limit of 19,938 migrants from 2021 will be crossed within days.
