Russian general Sergei Surovikin, who apparently fell out of favor after the Wagner mercenary uprising in June, is said to have been sighted for the first time.
Well-known TV presenter Ksenia Sobchak published a photo on Monday that appears to show the general, writing: “General Sergei Surovikin is outside. Alive, healthy, at home, with his family, in Moscow. The photo was taken today.”
Prominent journalist Alexei Venediktov wrote in the Telegram short message service: “General Surovikin is at home with his family. He is on leave and available for the Ministry of Defense.”
Disappeared shortly after the Wagner Rebellion
In August, Soerovikin was replaced as head of the Russian Air Force by Colonel General Viktor Afsalov. Surovikin, nicknamed “General Armageddon” when he deployed Russian troops in the civil war in Syria, disappeared from the scene shortly after the Wagner mercenary uprising. During the Wagner mutiny on June 23 and 24, he appeared in a video asking Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin to give up. However, he left an uncomfortable impression and wore no military insignia.
background unclear
After the uprising, media reports said an investigation was underway into whether the general was involved in the mutiny. Accordingly, Surovikin would have been under house arrest. In October last year, the general became commander-in-chief of Russian troops in Ukraine. But already in January, the command was transferred to Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov, and Surovikin became his deputy. Reliable information about the background of the developments is lacking.
