Disappointed by Moscow – Russian ally wants to train with US military

Date:

Apparently the two allies, Russia and Armenia, are moving away from each other. In January, the Russian army’s ban on military maneuvers on Armenian territory caused a stir, and now a joint military exercise with the United States has even been announced.

The “Eagle Partner 2023” maneuvers, which will last from Sept. 11 to Sept. 20, include conflict stabilization operations to carry out blue helmet missions, the Armenian defense ministry said Wednesday, according to state news agency Armenpress. The two former Soviet countries of Armenia and Azerbaijan have been fighting for decades over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which lies on Azerbaijani territory, but is largely inhabited by Armenians. Despite a ceasefire overseen by Russian peacekeepers, fighting continues to break out. Azerbaijanis have also been blocking the Lachin Corridor, Armenia’s only access to Nagorno-Karabakh, for months now.

Observers describe the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh as catastrophic. For example, there is a lack of food and medicine. Since Wednesday, bread has only been distributed against ration coupons. In this context, the Armenian leadership has increasingly expressed its dissatisfaction with Russia as a mediator. The government in Yerevan accuses Moscow, long regarded as the protective power of Armenians in the Caucasus, of not doing enough.

Prime Minister: ‘Dependence on Russia’s strategic mistake’
Apparently, attempts are now being made to involve Western states in resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. A few days ago, the head of the Armenian government, Nikol Pashinyan, described dependence on Russia on security issues as a “strategic mistake”.
