These are extremely dangerous developments that are taking place directly on the borders of NATO and the EU. Serious Russian attacks on the Ukrainian border area with Romania have now prompted those responsible in Bucharest to take protective measures for their own population. The nerves are on edge.
In the event of threats from the air, protective quarters and warning mechanisms must be set up on the Romanian side in the Danube Delta. A corresponding decision was taken on Friday by the National Committee for Emergencies in Bucharest.
Half a kilometer between NATO and the war zone
The unusual measures certainly did not come out of the blue: Russia has attacked the Ukrainian Danube port cities of Reni, Izmail and Kilija several times in recent days. These are located less than 500 meters from Romanian territory – within sight of residents of the opposing Romanian Danube towns.
Explosive precedent: Drone remains landed in Romania
On Monday, suspected remains of a drone landed in Romania – in a wooded, uninhabited area near the village of Plauru, directly opposite the Ukrainian port city of Izmail. According to the Romanian Ministry of Defense, it is suspected that it was a spy drone without an explosive. The fuel on board was probably set on fire. NATO does not believe the incident was intentional on the Russian side.
The mood in Romania is simmering: government too defensive?
In Romania, there was sharp criticism of the government for initially denying the alleged drone incident for two days. Criticism was also expressed that there were no warning or protective measures for the population in the affected region. About 27,000 people live in 32 towns in the sparsely populated Danube Delta.
