Frenchman arrested – Abaya ban: death threat against school director

Date:

The recently imposed ban on abayas in French schools has not only led to heated debates, but also to the first arrests. The father of a student was taken into custody for threatening to kill the head of an educational institution. The daughter of the arrested man was not allowed to enter her school because of the long robe traditionally worn by women in Islamic countries.

Because the girl had been rejected from school several times, the angry man called the director of Clermont-Ferrand in central France on Thursday and threatened him. Then the handcuffs clicked. According to French media reports, the father was still in custody on Friday.

Education Minister Gabriel Attal was shocked by the incident and assured the affected school that it would guarantee the protection of teaching staff. “Such threats are unacceptable,” Attal said.

The Supreme Administrative Court approves the abaya ban
France considers itself a secular country where there is a strict separation between state and religion. Headscarves, yarmulkes and especially large crosses were banned in schools as early as 2004. On Thursday, the State Council, the highest administrative court, rejected the urgent request of an Organization for the Rights of Muslims (ADM) against the abaya ban. The Council of State decided that this did not constitute a serious and clearly illegal infringement of a fundamental freedom. The organization fears discrimination against schoolgirls based on appearance and religious beliefs and criticizes the lack of clarity in the ban
