Due to the numerous arrests of smugglers in and around the capital, the Upper Austrian Police has now upgraded: the Upper Austrian Police has purchased six heartbeat detectors to combat smuggling crime. These highly sensitive vibration sensors make it possible to check trucks for signs of life without having to open, search or even unload them. The devices are attached to the chassis of a truck and can determine in less than 30 seconds whether there are people in the loading area or not.
More arrests, fewer asylum applications
State Councilor Wolfgang Hattmansdorfer got an idea of this during a local inspection on Thursday: “It is important to equip the police with the latest technology to deprive the smugglers of their business base.” Although significantly more refugees were arrested in Austria, the number of asylum applications has fallen sharply this year: 28,491 applications had been submitted at the end of July, compared to almost 44,000 in the same period last year. Once again this year, the Syrians are the strongest group, both of the smugglers and of those who are towed.
