In Australia, a 69-year-old died in a desperate attempt to free a friend from the clutches of a poisonous snake.
The animal was wrapped around the friend’s ankle. When he tried to remove the animal from its leg, the man was bitten several times by the snake.
The man died in the presence of his family
Despite immediate resuscitation efforts, the rescuer himself died in the presence of his family – before the saving antidote arrived on the school grounds in the city of Mackay, Queensland. According to police spokeswoman Claire Bertenshaw, it was likely a brown snake due to the symptoms the man showed. The diurnal brown snakes are considered one of the most venomous snake species in Australia. Their toxin is extremely potent and contains anticoagulant and nerve damaging substances.
Media speak of ‘heroic act’
The accident occurred during the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the Koumala State School in the tropical north of the country. The media spoke of a “heroic act”: the dead man’s friend was also bitten by the snake, but survived.
