Thousands of people demonstrated in Bilbao this Monday, demanding a pension update in line with the real CPI, of a minimum pension of 1080 euro and “quality” public services.
The event, convened by the Movement of Retirees from Biscayhas become a festive atmospherewith music by txistularis and batukada from feminist groups, coinciding with the celebration of Aste Nagusia in the capital of Biscay.
The march started from Plaza Moyua and headed to the Arenal celebration site, led by a banner declaring the protest’s demands.
Those in attendance also carried placards that read “No to the cuts in Osakidetza” and “Banking, thieves, give back the billions,” among other slogans.
During the tour, in which participants from Asturias, Navarre, Cantabria and Galicia took part, slogans were chanted in favor of “public” nursing homes and against the competent Provincial Council of Bizkaia in this matter, reminding them that “government is not privatization”.
Pensioners’ Movement spokesman Jon Fano explained in statements to the media that the requirement for a minimum pension of 1,080 euros would fundamentally benefit women, who earn well below that figure.
Among the public services, he has expressly mentioned the Basque health service-Osakidetza and denounced its “dismantling and privatization”.
