The expectations of the 15,741 school starters in Upper Austria are enormous, but there are also many concerns. A primary school in Linz is just one example. The parents are already looking for a teacher so that the class is not alone.
“Good morning, teacher!”, “Good morning, children!” – today it won’t be so cheerful at the start of school in a third class at primary school 44 in Linz-Pichling. The class starts the new school year without a teacher – parents are already searching on social media for a teacher. Not an isolated case. In total, there are approximately 150 teaching places vacant in Upper Austria’s compulsory and secondary schools, where there are currently 172,813 children. In order to cover the shortage in the longer term, an active campaign is being advertised this year for teacher jobs in the Matura classes.
On Monday, all 15,741 Table classmates will be safely taken to school by their parents, but many fathers and mothers do not have time for the ‘parent taxi’ every day. Before school started, “incidental transit” buses, which run outside of regular public transit, were shaking in about 50 communities. Not all worries are over yet and in some places improvisation will have to be done.
More Ukrainian children
By the way, today almost 1,500 children and young people from Ukraine start the school year in Upper Austria; this number has increased by approximately seven percent compared to the previous year.
