In Norway, the ruling Workers’ Party became the strongest force in national regional and local elections, not for the first time in almost 100 years. According to official figures, after about 60 percent of the votes were counted, Labor fell to 21.7 percent, while the Conservatives won 25.9 percent.
It is the first time since 1924 that the left-wing faction did not come first in national elections.
The Prime Minister wants to continue the minority government
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre had already stated that he would continue his minority government regardless of the outcome of the regional elections. Monday’s elections have no influence on the composition of parliament.
Inflation causes problems for households
Sharp increases in consumer prices, such as an increase in food prices of around nine percent within a year, as well as a sharp increase in interest rates, have recently placed a heavy burden on households in Norway. The government also limited public spending due to concerns about rising inflation. The next parliamentary elections are in 2025.
