According to Russian information, Ukraine attacked the town of Enerhodar near the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant with drones on Monday. In addition, traffic on the Crimean Bridge has again come to a standstill. Meanwhile, Russian border guards complain of a lack of weapons and equipment.
Six drones were fired at the city of Enerhodar and all were destroyed by Russian forces, the head of Russia’s state nuclear power company Rosatom, Alexei Likhachev, said on Tuesday, according to RIA news agency. There was initially no comment from Ukraine.
Enerhodar and the nuclear power plant are located in southern Ukraine’s Zaporizhia Oblast, which is partly controlled by Russian forces. The nuclear power plant was occupied by Russian troops early in the war that has been raging since February 2022. Fighting continues in the area and the site of the nuclear power plant has also been hit several times. Russia annexed Zaporizhia Oblast, as well as Donetsk, Luhansk and Kherson, in September 2022, although its forces do not have full control over them.
Russian border guards poorly equipped
According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russian border guards are inadequately equipped. A war correspondent and member of the Kremlin’s Human Rights Council reported complaints from border guards. They complained, among other things, that the authorities had poorly prepared them. There is also a lack of “adequate digital communications systems, reconnaissance and combat drones, mobile transportation and medical care.” The border guards could only obtain the necessary weapons and supplies through ‘personal connections with Russian military units’.
Crimean bridge closed
Traffic on the Crimean Bridge has been temporarily suspended, the bridge’s Russian-appointed operator announced on its Telegram channel. He gave no reason. The Crimean Bridge has been the target of increasing drone attacks from the air and sea in recent months.
Zelensky calls on Ukrainians to focus more on war
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on Ukrainians to focus on the war, even 18 months after the start of the Russian invasion.“Although today is the 565th day of this war, every individual must remain focused on the defense of the state, just as in the first days,” Zelensky said in his evening video message on Monday evening.
“Russia is not hoping for a victory. The enemy just hopes that we won’t resist the whole thing. Ukraine must remain steadfast. Anything that makes us stronger is a priority, the only priority. There can be no negligence. We will not allow anyone to weaken Ukraine.” In an interview with the American television channel CNN, Zelensky also pointed out that the Ukrainian counter-offensive was not a “movie with a happy ending”:
Problems with counter-offensive
The counter-offensive of the Ukrainian armed forces began in the summer of 2023. A short time later, there was a shower of criticism from the foreign press. In June, Zelensky admitted that the offensive was progressing more slowly than hoped. One of the reasons he mentioned was large minefields. In early September, the Ukrainian armed forces announced that they had broken through the first and strongest line of defense on the southern front.
