A luxury cruise ship with 206 people on board has run aground in a remote area east of Greenland. The crew was initially unable to free the ship themselves, the Danish military’s Arctic Command said on Tuesday. The Ocean Explorer has been moored in a fjord about 1,400 kilometers northeast of the Greenland capital Nuuk since Monday.
“The nearest help is far away, our units are far away, and the weather can be very unfavorable,” said Brian Jensen, head of Arctic Command. So far, there have been no reports of injuries on board and there is currently no immediate danger to passengers or the environment, he explained.
The approximate position of the ship in the Greenland Sea:
Help won’t arrive until Friday at the earliest
The nearest Arctic Command unit was an inspection ship that was about 1,200 nautical miles (2,220 kilometers) away at the time of the incident, Jensen said. This means the grounded ship could not have arrived until Friday morning (local time) at the earliest.
So the authority asked a nearby cruise ship to remain on site so they could help if the situation changed.
