A visit to a restaurant in the French city of Bordeaux turned out to be a real source of danger. Because the guests were served spoiled sardines there. A 32-year-old did not survive and twelve other people had to be treated in hospital for food poisoning. Among them are countless tourists.
A tourist from Germany was among those affected, the French health authority announced on Tuesday evening. He has since returned to his homeland and is doing well, said Dr. Benjamin Clouzeau. Tourists from Canada, Ireland and the US are also among the sick.
32 year old died
The nationality of the 32-year-old who died of food poisoning is not yet known. The owner of the Tchin Tchin Wine Bar popular with tourists admitted that he served his guests pickled sardines that were probably spoiled.
When he opened the jars, he noticed a “strong odor,” he told the Sud Ouest newspaper. He threw away some of the sardines, but served the rest to his guests.
The authorities are appealing to you to come forward
The health authorities are calling on other possible visitors to the restaurant to contact them if they have any complaints. Samples were taken at the restaurant to determine the cause of the disease.
Botulism: Five to ten percent die
The patients suffered from botulism, a form of food poisoning that can be caused by spoiled canned food. It leads to death in five to ten percent of cases because the breathing muscles are paralyzed. Five of the sick restaurant visitors are currently receiving artificial ventilation.
